Our Team

Elizabeth J. Grossman is a stand-up comedian, lawyer, democracy advocate, and nonprofit leader based in Chicago, Illinois. She is passionate about drawing connections between the arts, local economies, and democratic vitality. Elizabeth began her career as an immigration lawyer working for the federal government during the first years of the DACA program. Later, as a private attorney, Elizabeth’s law firm partnered with the national ACLU Immigrants Rights Program to fight the cruel family separation policy during the first Trump Administration. In addition to the class action suit, Elizabeth represented an individual client who had his four-year-old daughter taken from him at the border; Elizabeth ensured their reunification and helped them to file for legal status. Elizabeth has also litigated against unconstitutional police practices in St. Louis County, Missouri, and successfully advocated for various individual clients seeking asylum. In 2019, Elizabeth joined the Pete Buttigieg presidential campaign as National Policy Director, where she led the democracy, criminal justice, immigration, racial justice, and climate policy teams and organized volunteers in Iowa and California. For the past six years, Elizabeth has consulted various nonprofit organizations and campaigns. As Executive Director at Common Cause Illinois, Elizabeth pushes for a democracy that is free from corruption and serves the people, not politicians. Current campaigns include a push to bring ranked-choice voting to the city of Chicago and a ban on foreign corporate spending on state elections. In March 2025, when Elizabeth’s former law firm capitulated to Trump, Elizabeth organized alumni of the firm to respond collectively and stand up for the rule of law. Her advocacy was covered in the New York Times, Huffington Post, CBS Evening News, Politico, and Above the Law.
